Any turtle that has really long claws is most likely a male. That includes Eastern Painted Turtles. Other traits of the Eastern Painted Turtle are 2 yellow spots behind each eye and white stripes running down the throat. Red or orange stripes running down the legs and tail. The shell can be dark green to black in color, with golden or yellow stripes going horizontally across the shell. There might be a bit of a orange or yellow vertical stripe running down the middle of the shell.
