you take off the tire and then take off the brake rotor and calipers and the the spendle and need a ball joint remover , rent from auto zone and then press out ball joints and then press in new ball joints and reassymble!

Get a manual first. It is a lot of work, requiring a big drill to remove the rivets that hold the ball joints in from the factory. Unless you are a capable mechanic with proper tools and safety knowledge of working with auto front ends, don't attempt it yourself.

There are several reasons. Two common reasons would be warped brake rotors or a bad ball joint which should be fixed immediatly.
Just learned this the hard way today after trying to do it myself. The ball joint will not come out until you remove the brake caliper and rotor. Too time consuming for a do it yourselfer in my opinion...I had the shop down the street replace the ball joint for 1.1 hours labor (about $80).
