the negative is closer to the firewall
The negative cable is connected to ground. It may be connected to the engine block or the frame of the vehicle. The negative cable connection is also slightly smaller than the positive.
Connect the positive (+) Red cable from the charger to the positive (+) post of the battery. Now connect the negative (-) Black cable to a metal part of the engine. Do not connect to negative battery post. Plug the charger in. Unplug the charger before removing the cables. Disconnect the negative cable first.
The big black cable goes to the battery and the starter . The smaller black with red stripes wire goes to the small terminal on the solenoid marked s.

There are typically two cables, one is usually red and the other black.
