Good engine ground
There are typically two cables, one is usually red and the other black. The black cable attaches to the negative terminal on the battery and the red wire connects to the positive terminal on the battery. When removing the battery from the vehicle always remove the negative cable from the battery first. When installing the new battery always connect the negative cable to the battery last.
The ground strap is the battery cable that connects from the negative battery post to ground, usually the chassis.
To use two 12 volt batteries in a 24 volt system they must be wired in series. For this explanation I will refer to them as battery #1 and battery #2. This answer describes the wire connections for a vehicle with a negative ground electrical system. The cable from battery#1 Negative terminal connects to ground (Frame or engine block). The cable from battery#1 Positive terminal connects to Battery #2 Negative terminal. The cable from battery#2 Positive terminal connects to Starter solenoid.
The negative battery lead cable is to be connected to the negative lead terminal on the battery.
After removing the positive and negative cable, follow the negative cable to where it's grounded to the wheel well. Remove the end of the cable with the wrench. Track the positive cable to its connection on the driver's side of the engine and remove it with the wrench. Now, attach the new positive cable first and install the negative cable last and start the car to ensure that the connections are working on your Ford Escort.
My negative battery cable on my 1987 BMW 325is is in the trunk.
The positive cable is connected to the alternator and starter. The negative cable is connected to the chassis or engine ground. Positive is red and negative is black. The positive post is slightly larger than the negative post.
Normally the positive terminal will be red and the negative will be black. But if they are not color coded, just follow the cable from the battery posts. The one that connects to the engine block or to the automobile frame or chassis is the negative terminal.
Normally the black battery cable is negative.
the negative is closer to the firewall The negative cable is connected to ground. It may be connected to the engine block or the frame of the vehicle. The negative cable connection is also slightly smaller than the positive.
current flows from the negative to the positive cable and back into the battery cells, recombining with the element depleted of electrons that are flowing out the negative cable. The process is not 100% efficient and the battery will eventually cease producing current.
Connect the Positive + battery cable to the positive + battery post first. Then connect the Negative - cable to the negative - battery post.
