Before henry VIII met anne of cleves what did he think she looked like?

He had a painting of her (by Holbein I believe) which apparently was a somewhat flattering depiction of her. Unfortunately Anne of Cleves in the flesh was disturbingly different.

Henry claimed he had been misled about Anne's appearance. Hans Holbein (I think) painted a portrait of her that was, apparently, rather flattering. Henry didn't find Anne attractive and the marriage was annulled. After the annulment Anne remained in England and was referred to as the Royal Sister. An annulment is somewhat different to a divorce.

This "quote" was first attributed to Henry in Smollett's Histroy of England in 1759, 200 years after their marriage. Of all that was written in Henry's time nowhere was this phrase ever mentioned. It's true that Henry took an instant dislike to Anne, their first meeting was a disaster. Henry put on a disguise and met her without revealing his true identity. He was no longer the handsome athletic man his legend claimed, he was by then enormously fat with a leg that carried a stinking, infected ulcer. She paid this unattractive stranger no attention and Henry left with his ego shattered.

Historically speaking, Henry VIII thought Anne of Cleves (Anna von Kleve) to be ugly. Realistically, what we see is a disappointed man beyond his youth who accosted his wife-to-be during a bear baiting and kissed her, while dressed in poor clothing and pretending to be no more than a burgher. Of course Anne spurned him and spat his spittle out of her mouth which certainly dismayed him; he finally realized that he was no longer a young man or desirable to a young woman. They married, per the agreement, but were declared to be no longer man and wife months later, when Henry's appetite was drawn by Katherine Howard. Anne of Cleves was reportedly called the 'Dutch Mare' by Henry during one of his rampages.
