He had a painting of her (by Holbein I believe) which apparently was a somewhat flattering depiction of her. Unfortunately Anne of Cleves in the flesh was disturbingly different.

Why did Anne of cleves marry Henry VIII?

He needed a wife. Previous wife (Jane Seymour) had provided him with a son. He now needed a wife to look after and raise his son. Henry wanted to 'recapture his youth'. Thought a young wife would help stop the onset of old age (Henry was 50 by the time he married Anne of Cleves) He had a Portrait from someone and thought she was beautiful, but Henry did think she was the person he hoped she would be.

From Henry's point of view Jane Seymour was the wife he loved the most, partly because she gave birth to a son. However, nowadays every one probably think that they weren't that pretty...

When and where did Henry VIII meet Catherine of Aragon?

In 1501 when the Princess came over from Spain to marry his brother Arthur. Katherine of Aragon was first married to Arthur (Henry's older brother and the heir apparent to the throne of their father, Henry VII), but Arthur died on April 2, 1502, only about 5 months after his marriage. King Henry VII, in an effort to keep up the Spanish - English alliance that had been so strengthened by Katherine and Arthur's (brief) marriage, promised Henry VIII in marriage to Katherine on June 23, 1503, (when Henry VIII was about 11 years old) to take effect on June 28, 1505 (Henry VIII's 15th birthday - Katherine was about 5 years older than he). However, they did not wed until June 11, 1509, shortly after Henry VIII became king (12 days before his June 23 coronation) on the death of Henry VII.

Why Henry VIII marriage to anne of cleves fail?

Henry thought that she was ugly and looked like a horse. But apparently Anne of Cleves was a very pretty lady and it was more her personality that made Henry not like her. Although divorced, Anne of Cleves was probably the most lucky of all the wives he married as she and Henry were great friends after the divorce. Henry gave her lots of jewels and palaces.

Are most of the Kings and Queens of England from German heritage?

no. The only one I can think of was Anne of Cleves a German Princess who breifly married Henry VIII.

When did Anne of Cleves divorce Henry VIII?

anne of cleves divorced Henry viii because he wanted a son and not a daughter. Henry VIII described Anne as a 'Flanders Mare': Not a nice way to think of the wife ! Henry claimed he had been misled about Anne's appearance. Hans Holbein (I think) painted a portrait of her that was, apparently, rather flattering. Henry didn't find Anne attractive and the marriage was annulled. After the annulment Anne remained in England and was referred to as the Royal Sister. An annulment is somewhat different to a divorce.

Who did King Henry call flanders mare?

Anne of Cleves: I don't think she was his sort of lady... ! Actually it's most unlikely that Henry VIII ever called Anne of Cleves a Falnders Mare. This "quote" was first attributed to Henry in Smollett's Histroy of England in 1759, 200 years after their marriage. Of all that was written in Henry's time nowhere was this phrase ever mentioned. It's true that Henry took an instant dislike to Anne, their first meeting was a disaster. Henry put on a disguise and met her without revealing his true identity. He was no longer the handsome athletic man his legend claimed, he was by then enormously fat with a leg that carried a stinking, infected ulcer. She paid this unattractive stranger no attention and Henry left with his ego shattered.

Which one of Henry VIII wives did Henry VIII think was ugly?

Historically speaking, Henry VIII thought Anne of Cleves (Anna von Kleve) to be ugly. Realistically, what we see is a disappointed man beyond his youth who accosted his wife-to-be during a bear baiting and kissed her, while dressed in poor clothing and pretending to be no more than a burgher. Of course Anne spurned him and spat his spittle out of her mouth which certainly dismayed him; he finally realized that he was no longer a young man or desirable to a young woman. They married, per the agreement, but were declared to be no longer man and wife months later, when Henry's appetite was drawn by Katherine Howard. Anne of Cleves was reportedly called the 'Dutch Mare' by Henry during one of his rampages.
