It depends on what you're looking for. The main city is called Kahului. This is where the airport and most of the big general stores are (mall, Walmart, Costco, etc). Ka'anapali in western Maui is where all the big resorts and water sports are. It's probably not the best place to live on Maui since it's packed with tourists. Lahaina, just south of Ka'anapali, is the old capital with lots of art galleries and nice restaurants. Wailea is the most expensive area in the south part of the island with luxury homes and Golf courses. Great place to live, but you'd have to have a lot of money. Kihei is right in between. It's a good central location with the feel of a California beach town. Pretty reasonable housing prices too. The other main area some people like to live is what they call "upland". This area is on the south and western side of the island near the bigger towns, but it's further from the ocean. Housing prices are better, and it's got more of a rural feeling. No matter where you live, it's pretty easy to get anywhere else. Only place you wouldn't want to live is on the east side of the island near Hana. It's beautiful and tropical, but very isolated from the rest of the island (3 hour drive).
