The hostilities began with the bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor on April 12, 1861. They effectively ended with the surrender of general Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on April 9, 1865.
Battles continued until April 26 in the Eastern Theater, and May 13 in the West, where the final Confederate forces (Cherokees under Stand Watie) surrendered on June 23.
