The Ghan is a passenger train that travels between Adelaide and Darwin, Australia. Adelaide is the capital of South Australia and Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory. Originally, the train only travelled as far as Alice Springs.

The name is an abbreviation of the Afghan Express taken from Afghan camel trails that trekked the route before the track was laid. It is almost 3000 km, or about 1850 miles long.

How long is the train journey from Cairns to Darwin on the Ghan?

You cannot travel from Cairns to Darwin on the Ghan. You would have to travel from Cairns down to Brisbane, where you would then need to take another train to Sydney. At Sydney you could catch a train to Adelaide, and only at Adelaide could you catch the Ghan to Darwin. Total travel would be about five days.

What are two places that are linked by the Oodnadatta Track?

The Oodnadatta Track is a mostly unsealed track linking Marree and Marla in the Tirari Desert of northern South Australia. The town of Oodnadatta lies along the route. The track is often taken by tourists as an alternative route between the major centres of Adelaide and Alice Springs, and it runs alongside the original Ghan railway.
