Rear of the engine block, near the oil pan.
Sometimes they use that threaded drain plug location to attach a knock sensor. So if you see a knock sensor threaded into the side of the block that may be where the coolant drain is located.
You need to first drain the coolant, to lessen the mess of spilt coolant. Next you have to unbolt the coolant neck at the block to access the thermostat. After replacing, you have to refill/bleed the coolant system.
8mm square. Now, where do we find the tool?

If you mean drain holes for coolant... There is one located at bottom of the radiator. And two more on each side of the engine block.

The oil drain plug on the 2000 Ford Ranger is on the rear of the oil pan. It is located under the vehicle near the center.
Block plug It is above the starter, you will need to move the starter over then you can see the Allen key bolt head. Undo this and watch out for the flood of coolent!
It's located below the exhaust manifold.
Don't know off hand but you could always pull the lower radiator hose and drain it that way.
its on the bottom side of the radiator with a white plug.
Remove the lower radiator hose.
remove the lower coolant hose and drain it into a catch pan
