It depends on your state, I know in KY you can't get a title for it but you don't need one anyway, just make sure you have a bill of sale from the seller to prove you bought the quad.

Please post your state.. I live in New Jersey and you can get a tittle actually called a certificate of ownership in NJ - for an ATV that doesnt have papers provided it doesnt have a lien on it . Banks put liens on ATV when you borrow money to buy them . Once you finish paying it off they send you a lien release letter. It is an involved process to get a title and all said in done it can cost you $200 to $250. I am going through it now. I got a great deal on the bike so its worth it to me.. but i will never buy an ATV again without papers.. its just too risky (scarey) and it takes way to long to get a title 2 to 3 months in my state.
Beware if the original owner screwed the bank and didnt pay them well your out of luck and will never get a title or be able to register the ATV not unless you settle the debt owned, that's if they are even willing to do that.. I have heard nightmarish stories of people buying an ATV no papers and finding out theres a lien on it and then having to go to court to sue the guy they bought it from for there money back..
I forgot one thing you may even get the bike repossed if the bank can find it or the authorities get there hands on it... although it is unlikely it can happen

Beware of ATV's without titles or ones that have info under lien holder on the back of the Certificate or Origin. You can get a tittle for an ATV without papers but it is a long process and costs aprox.. $200 - $250 . There are conditions in which you cant get the title and that's if the ATV comes back with a lien on it .. then forget it.. If the original buyer stiffed the bank then you cant get a lien release letter and then you cant register it or get a title.. That's why ATV's without papers are much cheaper. you are rolling the dice.. good luck
