There are many Boy Scout merit badges. There are more than 100 badges. They range from swimming to rifle shooting to Citizenship badges.

Merit badges are awards earned by Boy Scouts based on activities within an area of study. The purpose of the merit badge program is to allow Scouts to examine subjects to determine if they would like to further pursue them as a career or avocation. As of April 2011 there are 126 merit badges. A Boy Scout needs a minimum of 21 to earn Eagle Scout.
http://www.meritbadge.org should be a helpful resource for this question. It provides a detailed description and list of requirements for every Boy Scout merit badge.
The original Boy Scout handbook has changed a lot! For one thing, it had very few merit badges, one of which was master of arms (martial arts).
The Boy Scouts of America has a subsidiary called Learning for Life (LfL) that includes Exploring. LfL is an academic and character development program. Exploring was moved to LfL in 1998 and is a career exploration program. Explorers are not Scouts and do not earn merit badges. Explorer Scouts are a section of the Scout Association in the United Kingdom for youth ages 14 to 18. The Scout Association does not have merit badges, but a series of progressive awards.
As of October 2012 there are 130 merit badges offered. This is an unusually high number as they historically have sought to keep the number around 100, retiring some when introducing new ones. For a list of them with links to the requirements see the related link.
There are 7 requirements for the First Aid merit badge. I personally think the related link has the best website for merit badges. You can find the requirements for the first aid merit badge there. Also, if you scroll to the bottom of that page, you can find a "Workbook" that will help you to finish any merit badges.
The Historical Merit Badges were a promotion for the 100 year anniversary of the BSA.
