'Isolationism' expresses the view that a country seeks to devote its entire efforts to its own advancement and remain at peace by avoiding foreign entanglements. Many countries have practiced isolationism during certain times. For example, for a long time Japan closed its borders and ports. The main problems with isolationist views are that it ignores global market inter-dependencies, and falsely gives a sense of security when none exists in a global landscape. As well, if all countries isolated, technological and scientific advancements would stall because there is little to no sharing of information in isolationism.
Imperialism had both positive and negative effects. Great Britain had captured and colonized most land in India and Africa. These places tried to defend but the British armies had stronger weapons. They tried to convert the places they captured, to Christianity. The British took advantage of the natives because they knew they could. Because the British were so harsh to the africans, they never fully recovered therefore causing them to become a third world country. While the Indians gained back land little by little and got stronger.
The "scramble for Africa" meant that European nations wanted to get to Africa as quickly as possible and claim land because they were all competing over their overseas empire. Europeans wanted to get some land and explore Africa because they did not know a lot about Africa and its geography, calling it the "dark continent." Imperialism in Africa meant there was a new market for trading and Europeans thought it was their duty to teach their "little brothers" about industrialization and European life.
