When Federation was declared in 1901 Aborigines were given the vote only those states in which they already had the vote, which was all states except Queensland and Western Australia. In 1948 all Australians, white and black, became Australian Citizens. In 1967 an overwhelming majority of Australians decided at a referendum that Aborigines should be counted in the census.

Today, Australian Aborigines live in the towns and outskirts, and in the Eastern states of Australia. They comprise around 3 percent of Australia's population.
Prior to 1947, no Aborigine was able to vote. Aboriginal people became Australian citizens in 1947, when a separate Australian citizenship was created for the first time. Prior to this, all Australians were "British subjects". Aboriginal people gained the vote in Commonwealth territories in 1965, and earlier in different states, according to various state laws.
