Depends on the recipe and how big of a factor the butter is. If it is a large part of the flavor you can use margarine, but the end product will not be a good. If there is another dominant flavor or if it is just the shortening in the recipe such as a cake it shouldn't make any difference.
You can use margarine in place of butter. But if the recipe is for baked goods, normally you have to use sweet (unsalted) butter, and the margarine might be salted. Usually even cake recipes have some salt in them (like maybe 1/2 tsp), so just make sure that if you use salted margarine to replace sweet butter, omit the salt from the recipe.

Margarine is a butter substitute. In baking, I do not substitute margarine unless the receipe calls for it such as "1 cup butter or margarine". There are a lot of older receipes that call for butter, and are just plain tastier with the real stuff.

Many bakers would disagree with the notion that they are "substitute goods" since baking with margarine can produce unexpected (and often unpleasant) results. However, many households may consider butter and margarine substitute goods, since they are both fats, taste similar and have similar uses (at a household level).
