I am not a Mufti. I am a retired Professor of English, also Master in Islamic studies. I have read many Tafaseer and Bokhari Shrif an authentic collection of Sunna. In the light of my personal knowledge and the verdicts (Fataawas) given by renowned scholars, working in the vineyard, plucking grapes for making wine, working in a beverage industry that supplies wine, packing or selling wine are all forbidden by the beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (May peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him).

Answer by Prof. Muhammad Aslam Gondal

There are hundred and one commands in Judaism which they don't follow, the Christians don't follow the commands of holy Christ (May Peace be upon him), usury, Banking interest is Haram-unlawfu, prohibited- in Islam, yet the Muslims are running and working in banks, it does not mean that those commands have been changed. Labeling oneself the follower of a particular religion is something different but practicing it in letter and spirit is something else. God's commands are final, we try to satisfy our conscious on one or the other pretext. The verdict of the Holy Quran and sunna is final and binding on a true Muslim. It is up to the individual how far he honors and respects the Word of Allah Karim.

Reference: Sura Maida Para 7. Ayat - 90 Translation:" O ye who believe, intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by ) arrows, are abominations- of Satan's handiwork; Eschew such abomination, that ye may prosper." Well! eating pork is Haram in Islam, it doesn't mean that rearing swine, feeding them, selling and buying them is permitted. You can't eat your cake and have it. No one can deceive God on such pretexts.

I recently read an article on this very subject. In Pakistan, there is a brewery owned by Farsi people, but which employs Muslim workmen. At one stage, the Pakistani government banned the employment of Muslims, but then reversed this, declaring that Islam allows Muslims to work in alcoholic beverage industry, because they are only not permitted to drink alcohol. It should be noted, though, that the Pakistani Government is not an official source of Islamic Law.
