Without parental permission, your parents can request that the police return you to their care. You can go through a process of legal emancipation, but it is difficult without parental consent.

With parental permission, a child can live away from the parent at any age. It is common for parents to place children in alternate homes such as boarding schools, homes of friends and homes of other family members.

The age of legal majority, when a person is legally considered an adult is 18.

However, if you want to buy alcohol or a handgun (hopefully you'll avoid combining the two), you must be 21.

Private companies can usually impose further restrictions. For example, Hertz car rentals refuse customers younger than 21 and have higher rates for 21-24. You typically won't get your senior-citizen discount until 65.

If you are a minor, there are laws against taking you across state lines without parental permission, not to mention laws against marriage without parental permission or a court order.
