Most African cichlids are from the Rift Lakes in the Great Rift Valley, and they require very specific water chemistry. Although their water contains some salt (sodium chloride) it also contains other salts of potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium. Rather than being salt water, it is very hard water.

So to answer the question - no, African cichlids can't live in the kind of salt water that is used in marine aquariums. However, most of them (with a few exceptions, such as the hardy kribensis) can't live in true freshwater either. They need water that matches the chemistry of the Rift Lakes, which is unlike any other body of water on Earth.

Can your African chiclids live with your gourami?

99% of the African cichlids are very aggressive fish and will more than likely cause the untimely death of anyother type of fish (and usually same type) that you place within the confine of your aquarium. Also, one should note that PH levels differ between the two. While you can acclimate up and down with fish (Most African cichlids locally are kept PH 7.0 instead of recommended PH 8.2) not all will take the change in stride.

Is it OK to put live plants in a tank with African Cichlids in it?

Can you keep a Pacu in a 20 gallon aquarium with African Cichlids?

No way. Pacus come from the Amazon and their required water parameters (soft and acid) are as different from those required by African Cichlids (hard and alkaline) as could possibly be imagined. Pacus are not really suited to aquarium life anyway because they grow to well over 60 lbs in weight and are much too large for a tiny 20 gallon tank.

What the pH should be in water for tropical fish to survive and why?

Different fish species need different water parameters depending upon their natural habitat. The African Cichlids from lake Malawi need very alkaline (around pH7.8)and hard water but the Amazonian fish like the Discus need the opposite very acid water around pH5.8 and very soft. The reason for this is "The fish evolved in these conditions so that is what they need to breed and live successfully".

Can convict cichlids live in a bowl?

Absolutely not. No fish should ever live in a bowl, not even bettas or goldfish, as some people tend to believe. Convicts get to be around 6" in size and need at LEAST 30 gallons of water. You need a heater to keep the water warm, a filter and a bubble maker to oxygenate the water.
