No. It should start. It may run poorly and lack performance but it will start. If you have a no-start condition, (starter cranks over engine but engine doesn't start) check for spark, fuel and compression. You are missing one of these.
If it is the rear sensor, it will be in the differential. If it is a front sensor, it will be located at each front wheel.

I believe it is on the back of the header/manifold. There are two of them on some Escapes.
Follow the flow of air from the air cleaner to the throttle body. You will see it.

drain a little coolant out,just below sensor.take connector off sensor,unscrew sensor!! be carefull not to bang sensor they are sensitive.when putting on new one, wrap the threads with teflon tape to prevent leaking.
