Detonation of plastique requires an explosion with high brisance, which means a very high propagation rate (burning rate in meters per second). A grenade would probably not have the required intensity. Even if it did, the disruption of the plastic explosive by the casing of the grenade would likely prevent it from absorbing enough energy, quickly enough, to disrupt its molecular structure and cause an explosion. It is not impossible, but rather improbable at best.

A grenade detonator, on the other hand, is a different matter. It might well do the job if separated from the grenade and inserted in the plastique.

What are the three categories of explosives?

Primary and secondary explosives. The definitions of these are rather loose, however typically primary explosives will detonate when ignited (example: mercury fulkminate), and secondary explosives require a shockewave to detonate (example: TNT). The most accurate definition is when used in the context of an "explosive train" whereby a fuse ignites the primary high explosive which undergoes deflagration to detonation transition, this detonation produces a shockwave which is used to initiate a secondary high explosive. So explosive compounds are classified into primary or secondary based there primary use.

Who invented the hand grenade during World War 1?

The Hand Grenade was invented by the Chinese during the Song Dynasty. Clay or metal pots were filled with gunpowder, a fuze was lit and the bomb was thrown. Over time, improvements were made, some were effective, some not so much. William Mills is credited with developing the first modern time-fuzed grenade. The Mills Grenade Bomb was used extensively during WW1.

How can you stop an asteroid from hitting earth?

Small asteroids can be deflected by explosives (ordinary or nuclear) if they are far enough away. The problem is getting the explosives there. Asteroids travel at orbital speeds of thousands of kilometers an hour, and a large rocket would be required to reach the asteroid and match its speed, so that it could rendezvous and detonate. Hitting an asteroid with a head-on shot would be extremely difficult if not impossible, and could result in a shower of smaller pieces hitting the Earth.

Do grenades work in space?

In most cases, yes, they will work in a vacuum. It will depend on how the grenade was designed. If the firing mechanism is designed to work without the need for air, it should work just fine. Many explosives are made with the oxidizing materials as part of the explosive so they don't require oxygen.

How does a Grenade Hand Fragmentation Mark IIA1 work?

A hand grenade can be incredibly handy in an emergency situation. You pull the pin, throw it, and four seconds later it explodes. Let's take a look at how it works. There are four basic parts to the grenade. There's the pin, which holds the handle on, the handle itself, the fuse, which consists of a heavy metal shell with explosives inside. Technically the pin doesn't do anything. It's just holding the handle in place. This handle, however, is key. Once it comes off, the grenade is armed and there's no turning back. With the pin removed, the only thing holding the handle on is your hand. Once you throw the grenade, the handle flies off. That releases a spring that throws the striker down into the percussion cap. The impact ignites the cap creating a small spark. The spark ignites a slow burning material inside the fuse. the fuse ignites the detonator which sends off a small explosion inside the grenade. The detonators explosion lights the main explosive charge inside the grenade, and that blows it apart. Flying metal fragments from the heavy metal casing are what do the damage. So that's how a grenade works.

How much would you get for a used hand grenade?

ummm. A USED hand grenade wouldn't exist because, it's only a 1 time use as when you pull the pin it explodes, so therefore you wouldn't get a used hand grenade only the little bits a pieces of one.
