The court where the lawsuit is filed must have jurisdiction. One of the persons in the lawsuit must either reside there, or the cause of the lawsuit had to occur there.

In Virginia how do you file a lawsuit to garnish your daughter's wages?

If she is an adult the same process is used to file a civil suit against anyone. The lawsuit is filed in the jurisdictional court in the county where she resides. Contact the office of the clerk of the circuit court (or perhaps small claims) for filing information. If you prevail a judgment will be entered against the defendant/daughter and the judgment may or may not be enforced as a wage garnishment depending upon the laws of the state in which the debtor/defendant resides.

How do you use the word lawsuit in a sentence?

What does a judgment on your credit report mean?

If someone sued you and won a money judgment against you, it would show up on a credit report if you failed to pay the amount, and a collection agency was engaged to collect it, but failed to obtain payment from you. When a person wins a money judgment in a lawsuit, the court order will state the amount due to that person (the plaintiff) from the defendant who lost the lawsuit. Amounts ordered by a court can, alternatively, be collected by the County Sheriff's Department, on behalf of the person who won the lawsuit. Collections processed by the County are typically done via wage garnishment of the person who owes the money.

If a credit card company won an arbitration against you do they have to file a lawsuit against you to enforce that arbitration?

No, but they do have to file for a judgment in the appropriate state court in the county where the defendant debtor resides. The debtor retains all his or her legal rights to personal and real property exemptions allowed by the laws of the state and if necessary and more advantageous to federal non bankruptcy exemptions.

Can a credit card company file a lawsuit in a different county than the one you live in?

Only if there is not a court of jurisdiction in the county where the debtor resides, which is not likely.

Do you have the right to have a case moved to the county you dwell in?

I assume you are describing a legal case. In this state criminal cases are usually tried in the county where the crime was committed. The defendant does not have the right to determine they will be tried in a different county. If the county is changed, the defendant does not determine the location. If both sides are residents of the state, civil cases are tried in the county where the problem occurred.

Where can you find records of a lawsuit filed against an organization?

What happened to the police officers that stripped hope steffey clothes?

Research indicates that the plaintiffs (Steffey and her husband) entered into a confidential settlement with the county for an unknown reason, and an unknown amount, and dismissed their lawsuit against the county and the officers. However (at that time), a lawsuit was still pending against several private contractors supplying services to the jail. The question does not address that matter and no further research was performed on that aspect.

What does it mean when the county records assignment to a property under lis pendens?

A lis pendens means that there is a lawsuit pending against the owners of the property, and that the outcome of that lawsuit may affect title to the property. Anyone who buys a property subject to a lis pendens risks losing all or part of the property, depending on the outcome of the lawsuit.

If a judgment is entered against you in a county where you don't reside does the creditor have to file a new lawsuit in the county where you do reside?

No, once the judgment is granted, it applies to you, not your county. All they need is your new address. * Perhaps. If the judgment holder wants to enforce the judgment in a method other than filing an abstract judgment against the debtor's real property then the creditor will have to file a suit in the county where the debtor resides. Judgments granted in one county or state can only be transferred to another county or state as liens against real property owned by the debtor.
