Yes, a metal gas pipe can corrode. We have recently had British Gas renew the gas system in the village. They dug small pits to expose gas joints in the street, and then inserted plastic tubing through the old metal pipes. After rejoining in the pits, and in the houses to the gas meter, they filled in the pits and left. A good job done.
