Many people, whether affiliated with a religion or not, believe that a dead person can hear or see them. This is especially so in the first few days after death, or even up to 40 days. There seems to be a natural impulse for the survivors to speak directly to the deceased--to tell them goodbye, to say how they feel, to explain to them what just happened (how they died), to encourage them to move toward "the Light," to let them know it's OK to leave the earth now, they don't have to stay around or worry about their body or possessions (they can move on to Heaven, etc.). While some people pray to God to receive the soul of the deceased person, others speak directly to the dead. In Tibetan Buddhism there are special rituals to assist the dead on their after-life journey. Instructions may be read to the dying or dead person, telling them where to go now and what to do.

It is widely believed that consciousness survives the death of the physical body. If someone has died suddenly or prematurely, in war or in an accident or violence, some teachers say that the person may be confused when he suddenly finds himself without a body. He may be trying to speak with you (if you are close to him) and he is shocked that you don't seem to see or hear him. Therefore, it makes sense to reassure him, tell him what has just happened (he has left his body and is free to go to heaven, or whatever is your belief), tell him that you love him and you wish him well, or whatever your message would be. Even though you may be upset, it is better to calm yourself and give the dead person a positive message instead of blaming him for leaving you, etc.

Science cannot prove that consciousness survives death, that there is a soul, or that we can communicate with the dead. However, if you are a person of faith and you wish to speak to a loved one who has dies. you should do it. It is better not to do communication with the dead merely our of curiosity or for some material gain (as with a seance or Ouija board). Spirits of the dead may not be benevolent to you. But your loved ones may be waiting to hear from you immediately after their death. That is the time to forgive and say goodbye with love.

My dear young lady, to try and answer your question let me say this. The veil between this world and the world of the spirits that have gone on before is very thin, and the spirits inhabiting that world are not far from us. In my readings and in my own heart I know that they may be permitted to see and if authorized be permitted to hear us. And by that same authority they would be permitted to speak to us.

As no doubt you are still a young lady, do not spend your life mourning for the deceased. It is of far more worth it to commune with the living that it is to try and commune with the dead.

Perspective">A Pagan PerspectiveThe Path I follow believes the recently passed stay close for the first little while after their passing.

Often when we loose someone we care deeply about, there are things we still feel we need to say to, and to hear from them.

There is a portion of them that stays tuned to this world for a short while, in order to facilitate this communication.

With our Path we believe we have from the time of the passing until the Ritual at Samhain (that would be your Halloween) to make those communications. Once the Veil opens, the spirit crosses over and continues on its own pathway. Our continued mourning and attempts to contact them could "hold them back" for whatever their next step is.

Do say your goodbyes, make peace within your soul and then let him go.

Try to remember that as long as you continue to remember him, tell stories of him, and carry him in your heart, he will never be truly gone.

Christian Perspective

I believe, honestly, he cannot see you. But God can and He knows the pain you're going through.

If you talk to Him, He'll understand and help you through.

As was said, never forget your boyfriend but try to live for the living. That's probably what he would have wanted you to do.

Atheist Perspective

There is no such thing as a soul, nor any continuity of consciousness after the body ceases to function.

Consciousness (self-awareness) is a metafunction of the physical mind - when the mind ceases to function, self-awareness is also lost. Therefore, there is no way to communicate with the dead.

However, it is often of value to have conversations in which either you fill in what you think the deceased would have said, or have a close friend or family member who knew the deceased well fill in the deceased's part of the conversation. This can help you process through the grieving process, which is natural and sometimes painful.

A Hindu Perspective

Possibly. There is no evidence for the existence, or non-existence, of a soul so one can not say for sure one way or the other. If a soul does not exist then the answer would be no. But if a soul does exist then the answer can be either no or yes depending. If the soul can still retain its senses after death then yes, otherwise no. If the soul doesn't get reincarnated right away then it is possible that it could see and hear us if it is near us (because telepathy has been disproven).
