A religion can exist without a belief in the afterlife or of individual survival of death- Jainism is an example, as well as some (but not all) forms of Buddhism, but NOT without the acknowledgement that there is a supreme Higher Power who has relevance to human existence.

Buddhists do not worship any gods or God.
Hindus worship one Being of ultimate oneness through countless representations of gods and goddesses.
Jainists do not worship a supernatural creator. Jainism is an ancient religion from India that teaches that the way to liberation and bliss is to live a life of harmlessness.

For me, meditation is the very center of religion. The word religion means for me scripture, ritual, rites of passage, tradition, and so forth. Meditation leads to a direct contact with the divine. Religion without meditation is like a river without water. Dry. Desolate. Empty of life.

Religion is a strong belief and conviction of any individual or community to surrender in humility to the supreme Creator or the unresolved phenomenons in Nature. Religion however in Vedicthought means duty (Dharma) but erroneously applied to religious practices and worship as 'Religion'. Freedom of religion implies freedom from beliefs and convictions by an individual from the beliefs of a community/nation termed 'religion'. Freedom of religion for me means the freedom from religion. of another 'belief' imposed upon. I will finally be free of the regular condescending behaviors that have been historically associated with religions,although they are worship/practices of a certain belief that may promote bigotry and animosity against those who choose to believe differently. I hope to be finally free of religious prejudices that unjustly direct the social policies of Governments.
