It can, but it should keep burning as long as the other candles are lit. Ideally, it should be the tallest.

How do you light a Hanukkiyah?

The Chanukah menora - or chanukiyah - is lit every night over eight nights of Chanukah. First, set up your oil wicks/candles: Start with one on the first night, two on the second, etc. Plus, each night there is an extra candle called the 'shamash' that serves as the service candle; it's this candle you actually light with the match and use to light the others. There are 3 blessings to say before you do the actual lighting. One is said only on the first night - that is the 'she-hechiyanu' blessing. The other two are said every night. Once the blessings have been said (or sung) there are a few Chanukah songs you can choose to sing. It's good to be festive and hang around the candles while they are burning. Tip: The holiday is celebrating the miracle of the Temple's oil lasting for eight days, and in actuality, it is better to use an oil menora/chanukiyah than candles. But candles are fine too, according to Jewish law.

What do the differently colored candles on the menora stand for?

Different colored candles in a menorah don't stand for anything; they are just pretty.

When is the menora lit?

There was a 7-branched menorah which was lit in the Temple in Jerusalem (Exodus ch.25). After the Greeks desecrated the Temple only a small container of pure olive oil was found and this oil miraculously lasted 8 days until more could be obtained. The festival of Hanukkah commemorates this miracle and also the victory of the Maccabee rebels in their revolt against the Greeks. A special menorah (hanukkiah) with places for 8 candles (+ 1 "service" candle) is lit on each night of Hanukkah. Many people use olive oil instead of candles. After sunset (or later) one candle is lit on the first night, two on the second, etc. On Friday nights, Hanukkah candles are lit before Sabbath candles, and larger candles are used so that they will burn until after dusk for the required time.

Are there any special feast for Hanukkah?

The 3 Hanukkah blessings are only for candle lighting, there are no other ceremonies. When you light the candles you say: "Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-nai E-lo-he-nu Me-lech ha-olam a-sher ki-de-sha-nu be-mitz-vo-tav ve-tzi-va-nu le-had-lik ner Shel Cha-nu-kah." (Blessed are You, Eternal our God, Ruler of the universe, who has sanctified us with Your commandments, and commanded us to kindle the Chanukah light.) You also recite: "Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-nai E-lo-he-nu Me-lech Ha-olam she-a-sa ni-sim la-avo-te-nu ba-ya-mim ha-hem bi-zman ha-zeh." (Blessed are You, Eternal our God, Ruler of the universe, who performed miracles for our forefathers in those days, at this time.) And on the first night only, you recite the prayer for a special occasion: "Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-nai E-lo-he-nu Me-lech Ha-olam she-heche-ya-nu ve-ki-yi-ma-nu ve-higi-a-nu Liz-man ha-zeh." (Blessed are You, Eternal our God, Ruler of the universe, who has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this occasion.)
