Yes, if you have ever heard of a liger or a tigon, they are the result of a female lion and a male tiger. Ligers are much bigger than normal tigers. Actually, a liger embryo is so large that a female tiger is too small to carry it, so the female in the equation has to be a lioness and, therefore the male would be a tiger. Although a lion and tiger can mate to create a liger, ligers cannot mate together to create other ligers. It's kind of like how mules can't mate to create other mules.

Marco Polo on his visit to Asia termed tigers striped lions, researchers view the relationship as a cousinship between the big cat's. Lion's and tigers can breed hybrids, the male lion and tigress offspring is referred to as the liger, males maybe sterile but females are fertile. The cross between the male tiger and lioness breed a tigon males maybe sterile but females are fertile. There are cases where the male hybrid off spring are not sterile at this point it is genetics.

Yes, distantly.

They're both part of the "Big Cat" family.
Tigers and Lions are closely related. They both belong to the family Felidae and the Genus Panthera (roaring or great cats):

  • Jaguar, Panthera onca found in the Americas.
  • Tiger, Panthera tigris, found in Asia.
  • Leopard, Panthera pardus found in Asia and Africa.
  • Lion, Panthera leo found in Africa and India.
In fact, tigers and lions are so closely related that it is very difficult to tell them apart anatomically, except for the obvious difference in their fur. It is also possible for lions and tigers to interbreed and produce fertile offspring. The hybrids are called ligers (male lion mates with female tiger) and tigons (female lion, male tiger).

It has happened before. If you mean by mating them together, then yes. They ended up creating a new animal called the Liger.
