Although illegal, I have heard of them used for off-road use. NOT for street/normal use, as the intense output will/can blind oncoming drivers.
I've used aircraft landing light mounted behind the grill of both my 1970 Maverick and my 1966 Datsun pickup. I recommend using a relay wired and fused directly from the battery and the activating lead coming from the high beam light switch at the dash. Doing so will cause the light to only be on with the high beams and to go out when the dimmer switch is hit. I ran them for years and never had trouble with the law over them.
Remember the four headlight systems? Several of my friend used them in place of the high beam light, run through a secondary relay as described above.
Keep in mind that the smallest of them are 100 watts and the maximum wattage for headlights in most states is 75 watts.
