The length is key. You might be able to modify a longer cable, but it is easier to get one from a dealer or have a trans shop put one in.

The 2002 Ford Windstar shifter cable goes from the back of the transmission to the bottom of the shifter stick. The cable is approximately 6 feet long.

You adjust the cable on top of the shifter module ( just below brake master cylinder) If you can't recognise this get someone else to sit in driver seat (with ignition on, but not running) and shift gears . You will see the cable moving on top of module. This bolt holding the cable can be adjusted VERY carefully.
you probably broke the shifter cable. this is a metal cable that run from the shifter in your column to the prndl switch on the trans eay to fix and relatively cheap
The 1997 Ford Taurus shifting cable has adjustment swivel nuts on each end of the cable. You can turn the swivel nuts to lengthen or shorten the shifting cable.
A tranny shifter cable may be compatible in the years "91 thru 2000. I would go to your local car salvage that is what they're there for.

sounds like a broken linkage or mabe it just came loose I have a 99 Taurus same thing happened to me . It is the shift cable.
