In the pre-Vatican II tradition, Christmas Eve was a fast day up until First Vespers of Christmas in the evening, unless it fell on a Sunday.

In the current tradition, meat is permissible on Christmas Eve; but if it falls on a Friday, abstinence from meat is required until First Vespers of Christmas in the evening (unless dispensed of by the Bishops of your country, as is the case in Australia, the United States and a number of others).
