This was the answer previously posted. It is absolutely unfounded, for example, my dog's food (Chappie) contains low fat, wholegrain, vitamins and fatty acids and lots of protein.

A child needs a high amount of protein and calcium in their diet to support muscle and bone growth respectively, much of the baby food dominated by vegetables will not support such growth and leads to the sort of malnutritions seen in South East Asia.
It's not best to give a child dog food as the only food because it probably doesn't taste very nice and all diets should be varied, but apart from the unappealing look, it has to contain all the components needed to sustain a healthy (carnivorous) mammal.
In fact, almost all dog foods pad out the mix with wholegrains and vegetables (which are of little use to the dog) because it is cheaper than meat and sells well. Perfect for a growing child.
I am not indicating this is what a child should be moved onto as their main dietary meal, but considering the nutritional basis of the food and the fact that any canned food has been heat treated to rid it of bacteria, it is very safe.
