Dot4 fluid can be used and mixed with dot3 brake systems. If your brake system calls for dot4 fluid, you can not use dot3 fluid in the system, regardless of being only dot3 or mixed.
Dot3 system = either dot3 or dot4 fluid, or a mixture of the two.
Dot4 system = only dot4 fluid, and NO dot3 fluid.
