Can driving through a 5 inch deep puddle short the starter on a 1991 Nissan Pathfinder?

The water shouldn't bother it any. The risk in this case is from foreign material (sand, road debris, etc.) being deposited inside the starter. That could short it out. I suppose it's possible, depending on how fast you were going for the water to loosen/tear a wire off the starter so you might check that out.
