No, cord wire is only rated for connecting a table or floor lamp to a wall receptacle. By cutting it off and then connected to the circuit in a junction box is not acceptable practice.

I am trying to put up a light fixture but it has three wires a white one a black one and a Coppertone where does the coopertoned wire go?

The bare copper wire is a ground wire. if your old electrical system only has black and white, then you don't have a ground wire to hook the new fixture's ground to. Safest bet is to run a ground wire to that junction box (or hire an electrician to do that). If the box in the ceiling (I'm assuming its a ceiling fixture) is metal, the home's electrical system ground wire may be attached to the metal box itself. If that's the case, you simply need to attach your new fixture's ground wire (the bare copper one) to the metal box. If in doubt -- have an electrician look at it.

Is the wide prong on an electrical plug connected to the black wire?

No, the wide prong is neutral it is the white wire. The narrow prong is hot it is the black wire. The round prong (in a 3 wire plug) is safety ground it is the green wire.

What do you do when the ground wire from the wall is too short to reach the grounding screw on the new fixture plate?

Splice a new green wire to extend it, using the same size gauge of wire. Do not use wire nuts, use a proper electrical connector with grub-screws which can be securely tightened-up. As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed. Before you do any work yourself,on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances, always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOBSAFELY AND COMPETENTLYREFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

What do I attach the green wire from the light fixture to?

The green wire on the light fixture is a ground wire. If there is no ground wire in the conduit, the green wire should be attached to the metal box with a screw.

When removing an electrical plug from its socket grasp the electrical cord?

Do not remove any electrical plug by grabbing the wire. This weakens the connection at the plug. ALWAYS grab the plug itself when removing it.

How do you add a wall switch?

An electrical supply must be accessed and a wire fished to the fixture box. Do not attempt unless you are knowledgeable in electrical matters.

How do you wire in a pull chain switch in a bathroom light fixture?

If you are adding the pull chain to an existing fixture then the pull chain switch should have two wires. Wire nut either one to the hot wire coming in and the other to the black wire of the fixture.

How to Replace an Exterior Light Fixture?

How to Replace an Exterior Light FixtureReplacing an exterior light fixture is not difficult at all and you can do it even if you have limited electrical experience.Cutting the PowerBefore you do any electrical work of any kind, you will need to cut the power at the home's electrical circuit box. Go back to the light switch and turn it on to make sure there is no power. If you want to be extra safe you can even use an electrical tester to double check.Replacing the FixtureMost light fixtures will require a simple screw driver to install and uninstall them. Remove the mounting screws hold the fixture in place and allow it to hang by the wire connections. Unscrew the wire nuts holding the two wires together and remove the old fixture. The new fixture goes on the same way by connecting the like colored wires using the wire nuts. Unless the old wire nuts are in excellent condition, use new wires nuts, especially if they come prepackaged with the new fixture. Place all connected wire and wire nuts back into the electrical box mounted inside the wall. Install any new mounting brackets needed for the new fixture and secure the fixture to the mounting brackets using a screw driver. Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker box and test your new fixture connection.

What is a ground wire?

A ground wire is a typically uninsulated copper wire. The intent is to connect the wire to an electrical appliance or fixture to provide electricity a path to ground in the event of a short, thus preventing electrocution.

How do you change the headlight on a 99 Honda Accord?

THERE ARE PLUGS FOR THE HIGH BEAMS AND LOW BEAMS ON MY 99 HONDA ACCORD. Make sure the lights have been off for at least 20 minutes, those halogen bulbs are really hot, trust me. Simply grab the plug directly behind the headlight fixture, turn counterclockwise about a quarter of a turn, and the bulb assembly will come out of the headlight fixture. Once it is out of the headlight fixture, then you will need to unplug the bulb assembly from the electrical wire. To do this, hold the bulb part with one hand, and squeeze the bottom of the middle "lever" of the plastic connector to release the bulb from the electrical wire plug. Next, do not let the new halogen bulb touch your skin, because the natural oils from your fingers and hand will cause the bulb to overheat and the bulb will burn out or explode shortly after use. I have found it easier to do the following. Take the new bulb and plug it into the headlight fixture, remember the orientation or positioning that it came out a little crooked, and you will need to rotate it a quarter turn clockwise and it should lock back into place easily. Then, once the bulb is in the headlight fixture, plug in the electrical wire connector to the bulb. I know on some models the intake vent hose or the coolant reservoir is in the way, but once you get the bulb out, you can unlpug the bulb, and if you put the bulb in first then plug in the electrical wire connection, it should be much simpler for you. Good Luck!

How do you direct wire security light from outlet have 3 wires?

A 3 wired electrical fixture includes positive, negative and ground. The ground can be attached to one of the screws in the wall. In the case of the other wires, matching the colors, twisting and capping the wires together will handle the electrical installation.
