Yes it can. But that means big bucks to repair the trans. Somewhere around $ 1500 to $ 2000. to rebuild it. Depends whats wrong, bands, clutch's, torque converter. Is it only first to 2nd, or is it all the shifts?

They use a fixed, gear reduction transmission which reduces the number of rotations of the propeller from the number of rotations of the crankshift. The pilot doesn't do any shifting.

My 2001 grand am gt is shifting hard someone please help?

Most often hard shifting can be fixed partially by a transmission flush and change of automatic transmission filter. Also, i have had luck with using a large magnet on the bottom of the transmission pan before the flush because parts of the clutches that are loose will not be filtered by a clogged filter. Also, on my grand am, the transmission fluid was dangerously low when i went to change it when first buying the car- this could also be a possible problem.

Can your transmission be fixed if it runs out of transmission fluid?

well depends on how long it didnt have any fluid in it and if you noticed any damage noice or shifting difference. But yes it can really hurt your tranny if its messed up you can just get a rebuild kit for it and its not that expensive to repair or you can get used one.

Why does Trans makes brief grinding noise when changing to third or fourth gear?

I assume you are referring to a manual transmission. Grinding while changing gears is an indication of a synchronizer going bad. Until you get it fixed, try double clutching when shifting.

If you had your transmission fixed but it still does not shift smoothly is that normal?

If the original problem was the transmission not shifting smoothly then no it is not normal. Take it back to where you had the trans fixed and let them know. If they are an honorable business and their repair was recently they will fix it, if they put up a stink about it and their repair was recently then you may need to contact your Better Business Bureau. If its been awhile since the repair then the businesses warrenty may have expired. But still consult the business and they may help you out.
