In some cases, yes. Colic is simply "abdominal pain" and isn't a specific disease; however, depending upon the cause of the colic the horse can die of it.

Colic due to fresh grass tends to be a problem in early spring, when horses go from eating mostly dried hay to suddenly binging on sweet young grass. The sudden shift in sugar ratios (dried hay is more complex carbohydrates and fiber while young grass has more simple carbohydrates and less fiber) can cause intestinal cramping as well as metabolic imbalances. In severe cases, this can result in colic as well as laminitis, both of which can be serious medical conditions or even fatal.

It is recommended that you limit your horse's access to young green grass and slowly reintroduce them to it over the course of 3-4 weeks in the spring to minimize the risk of this. Once you have grass going to seed or flowers in the field, the grass is probably mature enough that your horse's risk of colic is low.

When your horse shows signs of colic what type is most common impaction or spasmodic?

Spasmodic colic is believed to be the most common cause of intestinal colic. Spasmodic colic can be caused when a hot horse drinks cold water. It can also be caused by fear or stress, therefore flighty, nervous, high-strung horses are more susceptible to spasmodic colic than a calmer, more laid back, "bomb proof" horse. Impaction colic is very common as well. It can be caused by the horse eating a lot of feed or roughage such as hay and/or grass and not having enough water to drink. It can be caused by bad or moldy feed or the horse not chewing its food properly (another reason to keep your horses teeth checked) There is also Flatulent Colic, also known as Tympanic colic. It's more the indigestion type colic which causes a lot of gas and pain, normally caused from eating too much grain or grass or eating moldy or bad feed.

Can A Horse eat a Lot Of Flour at One time?

Horses should not be eating any flour at all. Horses need hay and/ or grass to sustain themselves and possibly a hard feed or grain for added energy or fat. Flour will not provide anything beneficial to the horses and likely would cause colic which will require an emergency veterinarian visit, if it did not kill the horse first.

Colic sickness for horses and ponies is a sickness which can be cured by immediate action of a vet. Basically colic is a twisted gut, the horse/ponies' guts starts to twist and it hurts them so they want to lie down. The more the guts get twisted the more it damages the horses interior, if left untreated the horse will eventually die in the next 3-4hrs.Do not let them lie down it will hurt them more, you have to keep them walking calmly round in circles and talk to them until the vet arrives, be sure to call the vet IMMEDIATELY after you notice the colic.Symptoms of colic can be :Biting/scratching/snatching at their barrel (belly)Will to lie down constantlyLooks in deep discomfortif in field rolls constantlykicking barrel (belly)

How to prevent colic in your horse.?

Colic is the number 1 killer of horses. The onset can be very rapid and an inexperienced person may not pick up the signs of colic until it is too late. Colic (which can be caused by many different things) should never be ignored. Prevention is always to best way to go. Horses must be wormed on a regular basis. Discuss the options with your vet to get the best worming program for your horse. Another cause is overworking a horse and not cooling him out after a workout. Walk the horse until his coat is dry and then don't let him drink a lot of cold water. Abrupt changes in his diet can also cause colic. Or getting into the feed room and overdoing it on the grain. Mares can also colic after giving birth. Basically anything that stresses or shocks the horse's system. If you change anything in his life, even moving him to a new location, do it slowly if you can.
