Does a 1994 Saturn have a timing belt or timing chain?

Definitely a timing chain -- I just had mine replaced this past weekend mid-way through a 12-hour drive. Symptom was a grinding sound still present when all external belts disconnected -- opened it up and the plastic guide holding the chain in place was broken, and there were chips off some links in the chain; the mechanic was amazed I'd made it without any engine damage. We got a chain replacement kit (about $150) and went the remaining 7 hours without incident.

Do you need to replace the upper chain guide on a 1993 Nissan Sentra?

How do you adjust timing chain on a 1990 sentra?

Is there an adjustment that can be made easily if the timing chain is rubbing on the upper chain guard of a 1998 Saturn SL2 1.9L?

No. There is no adjustment. The timing chain tensioner is an oil pressure driven device that adjusts the chain tension as needed. It is located on the pivot guide behind the timing chain cover.

Your 2001 Ford ranger with 83000 miles makes a engine rattle during hard accelration or when at 2500 rpm's and you was told that it has a loose timing chain. whats the average cost to get it replaced?

I am assuming that you have a 4.0 SOHC engine, because that was the engine notorious for timing chain issues. Not that it matters, but a "loose timing chain" is not really a good explanation that you were given. Timing chains just don't somehow work themselves loose, in fact you probably don't actually need the chain itself, although the tech will probably insist on replacing everything in there. What actually happens is that the timing chain guides are made out of plastic. That was smart wasn't it? Run a metal chain over a plastic guide for 83,000 miles in a super hot environment, and guess what happens. You don't have to be a genious Ford engineer to figure it out, the plastic will become brittle and start breaking away and falling to pieces. Thus with not much of a timing chain guide left, the chain starts flopping around and rattling. Your decription of your problem, tells me that you are in the early stages of a primary timing chain guide/tensioner failure(there are three timing chains in that engine). It is roughly about an 8 to 9 hour(all day) job to do, and will probably cost you around $800 labor plus parts. I will guess around $250-300 in parts, but I am not sure about the parts. That is just for the primary chain. If they find that the rear secondary chain has a problem, then the engine has to be removed to access that one, and that will cost a lot more.

Does the 2000 Chevrolet tracker with 2.0 L engine have a timing belt or timing chain?

The 2.0L engine found in Chevrolet Trackers utilizes an upper timing chain that runs the intake and exhaust camshafts, while the lower runs a center gear which in turn, runs the upper chain. The lower chain on mine broke due to a worn timing chain guide.

I had my timing chain guide to break on my 1997 ford explorer sport and now my truck is missing. Do you think something else is broke in it as well?

who replaced the chain guide because it sounds like the timing might be off a bit like it skipped a few teeth when the guide broke from the slack.

How do you replace the timing chain on a 1994 Ford Crown Victoria?

It has two chains. CAUTION: At no time, when the timing chain(s) are removed and the cylinder heads are installed, may the crankshaft and/or camshafts be rotated. Failure to follow these directions will result in valve and/or piston damage. NOTE: Because this is not a free-wheeling engine, and it jumps time, there will be damage to the valves and/or pistons and will require the removal of the cylinder heads. The camshaft sprockets should only be disassembled from the camshafts when one of the components is to be replaced. Remove Valve Covers, Oil Pan and Engine Front Cover. Remove crankshaft position sensor pulse wheel. Rotate engine to No. 1 top dead center (TDC). Remove two bolts retaining RH timing chain tensioner to cylinder head and remove timing chain tensioner. Remove RH timing chain tensioner arm. Remove two bolts retaining RH timing chain guide to cylinder head and remove timing chain guide. Remove RH timing chain from camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket. Remove two bolts retaining LH timing chain tensioner to cylinder head and remove timing chain tensioner. Remove LH timing chain tensioner arm. Remove two bolts retaining LH timing chain guide to cylinder head and remove timing chain guide. Remove LH timing chain from camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket. CAUTION: Do not rotate crankshaft and/or camshafts or possible engine damage may occur. Inspect the plastic running face on timing chain tensioner arms and timing chain guides. If worn or damaged, remove and clean oil pan and oil pump screen cover and tube. Installation NOTE: If engine has jumped time, make sure that all repairs to engine components and/or valve train have been made. Then rotate engine counterclockwise 45 degrees. This will position all pistons below top of deck face. Install Cylinder Heads as outlined. Locate the copper links on the timing chains. They will be 180 degrees apart fro one another on each chain. When installing the chains on the gears, line one copper link on the chain with the alignment mark on the crank gear, and line up the other copper link on chain with the cam gear mark on each respective side of the engine. On the crank gear, both chains line up to the same mark. Install timing chain guides . Install timing chain guide retaining bolts. Tighten to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in). NOTE: Crankshaft sprockets are identical. They may only be installed one way. Install LH timing chain on camshaft sprocket. Make sure copper link of timing chain lines up with timing mark of camshaft sprocket. Install LH timing chain on crankshaft sprocket. Make sure copper link of timing chain lines up with timing mark of crankshaft sprocket. Install RH timing chain on camshaft sprocket. Make sure copper link of timing chain lines up with timing mark of camshaft sprocket. Install RH and LH timing chain tensioner and secure with two bolts on each. Tighten bolts to 20-30 Nm (15-22 lb-ft). Lubricate timing chain tensioner arm contact surfaces with clean engine oil, and install RH and LH timing chain tensioner arms on their dowels. With a suitable C-clamp around the timing chain tensioner arm and timing chain guide, remove all slack from timing chain while using caution not to bend the timing chain guide. Remove lock pins from timing chain tensioners and make sure all timing marks are aligned. Install Engine Front Cover, Oil Pan and Valve Covers. Start engine and check for leaks and proper operation.

How important is the chain guide on 2003 2.2 4-cylinder?

Very important. Without it, the chain could fall of. Also it keeps tension on the chain for correct timing.

Does my 2003 Chevy cavalier 2.2 liter engine have a belt or a timing chain?

Chain -No maintenance required unless noise detected - Guide/tensioner has plastic parts that can break/wear out with age, lack of lubrication or overheating. Generally, very durable engine if maintained properly.

What is the metal piece above the timing chain and how do you replace it in 94 Nissan altima?

Its the timing chain guide - take it off by removing the 2 bolts and leave it off. It causes more harm then good.
