If you mean just the gasket, yes, it is possible and a new gasket will cure it, which requires removal of the pump.
Here's something to consider though; If the water pump is old, or high mileage, check around for the price of a new one anyway, just to see. Some waterpumps are really inexpensive, so if you can get a new one inexpensively, you'd probably save yourself a few bucks, in the long term, if you replaced it now, while the pump is off anyways.
If you mean the shaft seal, yes, in fact, it is the most common cause of water pump failure, and the only repair is a new water pump.
i have a 1990 ford ranger i just got all new hoses and i have this really bad leak by the water pump you think its just a seal or the pump is bad im putting a new seal in it right now but if it keeps leaking what do i do?
water pump or seal gone bad
This indicates the inner seal is bad and the water pump must be replaced.
Yes. The seal for the water pump is bad. Replace it.
Water pumps fail due to a bad bearing and/or shaft seal. Look at the bottom of the pump. There is a drain hole in the casting below the shaft. If the seal is bad then coolant will be leaking out of this hole.
The seal between the impeller shaft and the housingwears out.
Bad water pump, the seal is gone. Get a new water pump.
Bad Head Gasket or Cracked Block (rare)
Only if it's going bad. When the bearing and seal are starting to go bad the water pump will leak from the weep hole.
water pump seal bad
Yes , overheating can warp/distort the gaskets or internal seals but either way you'll need to replace the water pump or purchase a repair kit for the pump which will contain the seal and mounting gasket .
Yes, there is a weep hole near the bearing on the water pump. When the seal goes bad, or when the bearing has to much play it in, it will start leaking fluid there.
