We often can. It's a lot like a gay person being able to recognize another gay person--the odd body posture, speech, and lack of eye contact are pretty obvious signals. Families and spouses of autistic people have a similar knack for recognizing autism.

The amusing result of this phenomenon? At least two or three of the engineering faculty at my local university show signs of Asperger Syndrome! My personal theory: Autism is the origin of the "nerd" stereotype!

Yes, often we can tell other Autistic people.

Even in those of us who learn to mimic neurotypical behaviour, because it doesn't come naturally to us there are micro-behaviors that are ever so slightly off from how a neurotypical person would behave. Neurotypical people don't often consciously pick-up on these micro-behaviors, but often will subconsciously so deem us weird or take a disliking of us, but Autistic people often can pick-up on them. Obviously if someone is severely effected by their autism it's easier to pick-up on because you know the behaviour and why they are behaving in certain ways. I enjoy being able to spot my people.

How does a person with autism look?

i don't know. probably not. Sometimes you can tell if a child is a little ''quirky'' and doesn't quite understand others verbal and non verbal cues. Some people have autistic tendencies yet don't have autism, and some have autism which is a little harder to detect. If you are worried it is best to consult a paediatrician or other professional. A person with autism does not differ in physical appearance compared to people without autism, although it has been suggested that as they grow older they might look slightly more youthful than others their age. Autism cannot be detected by physical appearance; it is detected by behaviors.

Can people with autism dangerous?

People with autism does not spread to others. It's just starts to happen when they're born. Sometimes if they have A LOT of autism, they may look scary and copy what you do because they have learning problems. How they act could indicate autism such as not listening to adults or repetitively stacking of lining up objects. They might also act weird. And also when they grown up and have children, the child may also have autism because of their gene. People with autism SHOULD go to a special school. You could tell if they have it by they're voice, how they act and of copping others. No, autism isn't really harmful to others. It won't spread to others. ;)

Can people read emotions?

How do autistic people feel about their autism?

It depends on the person. People with autism are, first and foremost, people. And just like all people they have their own feelings and opinions about themselves even if they are not able to express these opinions. Some people with autism embrace their disorder and celebrate their "unique" way of living in the world. They are proud of their disability and do not wish for a cure. These people are almost exclusively high-functioning. Often, but not always, they are also successful: they are able to have a job and/or family and/or live independently. Other high-functioning people find their autism quite disabling and if a cure was offered would take it. Often these autistic people have extreme difficulty making friends, have extreme difficulty holding down a job or are unemployed, want to get married and have children but are unable to, may live off of a meager SSI check, may live in Section 8 housing and in poverty and endure other hardships. We do not know how most people with low-functioning autism view their autism because most are unable to tell us. The few low-functioning people who are able to communicate have just as varied views as those who are high-functioning: some view it as a different way of being and others long for a cure from their low-functioning condition. Every autistic person feels differently about his or her autism. If you want to know how an autistic person feels about his or her autism than you should ask him or her rather than to make generalizations about all autistic people. If the autistic person is unable to tell you than it is probably best not to assume anything but to help them live the best life they can.

Do children with autism have loss of skills?

Autistic people are likely to lose one skill or another. However, they are more likely to gain unique skills that others won't have. There is one person who can't tell their left from right, but can play 2,600 songs on 13 different instruments from memory!

Does people have hope with autism?

I would like to say yes. If I am correct, there are medications and ways of dealing with autism. One of my friends is autistic, and you can barely tell he has autism, though she does need a little bit of cheering up every once in a while.

Do most people think people with autism are dumb?

Sadly, it is commonly perceived that people with Autism are not intelligent. This is in fact, not the case and I believe it is our job as Autism advocates to raise awareness about the fact that individuals with Autism can be productive members of society. At a recent conference I attended on work opportunities for adults on the Autism Spectrum, world renowned Autism expert, Susan Bryson, noted that only approximately 25% of people with Autism have an intellectual handicap. She then continued to point out that many people on the Autism Spectrum possess valuable cognitive strengths includingexcellent attention to detailexcellent pattern-detection skillssuperior visual search skillspersistancehighly reliablehighly accurate and often perfectionistic, possessing a desire for precision and being unwilling to sacrifice accuracy for speed. All of these attributes can make people with Autism extremely valuable employees so we all as a society have to start rethinking what it means to have Autism! For more information on Autism, check out autism beacon.com, your one-stop-source for everything related to Autism.Brenda Deskin------------------------------- It depends on whether the individual person has been educated on what autism is. Sadly, much of society, and even some individuals who may work with autistics, still can't tell the difference between "Asperger's/HFA" vs. "Kanner's". Along with all of the other disabilities where autism can also be effected. It also depends on where people get their information on autism from, and based on how accurate it is, along with updated. I truly think that the media in all forms are causing many complications for all of us to be accepted into society.

What is autisum?

Autism Also called: Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), Pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) Autism is a disorder that is usually first diagnosed in early childhood. The main signs and symptoms of autism involve communication, social interactions and repetitive behaviors. Children with autism might have problems talking with you, or they might not look you in the eye when you talk to them. They may have to line up their pencils before they can pay attention, or they may say the same sentence again and again to calm themselves down. They may flap their arms to tell you they are happy, or they might hurt themselves to tell you they are not. Some people with autism never learn how to talk. Because people with autism can have very different features or symptoms, health care providers think of autism as a "spectrum" disorder. Asperger syndrome is a milder version of the disorder. The cause of autism is not known. Autism lasts throughout a person's lifetime. There is no cure, but treatment can help. Treatments include behavior and communication therapies and medicines to control symptoms. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/autism.html >

How do you get involed with autism speaks?

You wouldn't, not if you cared about Autistic people. Autism Speaks is widely considered a hate group by Autistic people. They use hate speech and propaganda about Autism to increase their profits, very little of their profits go towards helping Autistic people and their families, and instead Autism Speaks support 'curing' Autism which means preventing Autistic people being born. The organization has no Autistic people in their leadership, they refuse to listen to Autistic people who tell them that they are causing harm to the Autism community, they also support anti-vaccination movements, torture of Autistic children, and they sympathize with parents who murder their Autistic children. If you're interested in helping Autistic people a better organisation to get involved with is the Autism Self Advocacy Network - this is run by and for Autistic people and does a lot more to help Autistic people than Autism Speaks ever has. Go to their web site and Facebook page to see what opportunities they have available to work with them or to do fundraising.
