Not likely because: Code p0420 refers to a problem with your catalytic converter. The engine computer is able to test that converter by using an oxygen sensor before and after the converter. The computer can only test the converter under very specific driving conditions. If the computer determines that it is a good time to test the catalytic converter it will run the test. It compares the oxygen sensor readings in front of the converter to the readings behind the converter to see if the catalytic converter is functioning properly. If it is not functioning properly it will trigger a p0420. Sometimes if a catalytic converter is on the virge of failing it may fail one test and pass the next. This will cause your check engine light to come off and on every once in a while when the test is performed.
Metallic donut/metal flange type
if it is just a blown exhaust manifold gasket it can ruin your valves, so replace it correctly and make sure everything is clean before putting on the new gasket
Valve cover gasket
Remove the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, and then remove the head. Scrap off the old gasket and install a new one. Reinstall the head and Torque the head bolts in the proper sequence. Reinstall the intake and exhaust manifold torque the bolts to the proper torque. This is a major repair and not for a novice to try.
White smoke exhaust usually means either a head gasket leak or an intake gasket leak. Both are cheaper to repair sooner than later.
an exhaust flange gasket, is the gasket, commonly called a donut that is used to seal where the exhaust pipe is bolted to the exhaust manifold
Metallic donut/metal flange type
I would check the Flange gasket. It is the gasket that sits between your exaust manifold and your exaust pipes
Unbolt from the block & take the nuts off studs to exhaust flange. You will need a new gasket for the block & a new one for the flange.
The exhaust manifold needs to have a gasket in place to help seal the juncture between the manifold and the engine. After the gasket and gasket sealer are in place, tighten the bolts for the exhaust manifold. The exhaust pipe can then be replaced on the new exhaust manifold.
You will need to remove the exhaust manifold retaining bolts in your 1993 Chevy Astro. Remove the exhaust manifold. Remove the exhaust manifold gasket and clean the surface. Reverse the process to install the new exhaust manifold gasket.
It would be best to get a new exhaust gasket.
An exhaust leak is usually the result of a bad gasket or a cracked manifold. For a proper fix, either the gasket or both the manifold and the gasket must be replaced.
If the exhaust manifold gasket is leaking the only fix is to replace it with a new one.
Intake manifold or exhaust? The complete job (parts and labor) is between $700-$900. depending on labor rates.
Where is the leak coming from. Most likely you will need to replace the exhaust manifold gasket which will require removing the exhaust manifold.
Changing the oil pan gasket on a 1995 or similar year Camry is realtively simple, but does require removal of the exhaust pipe. You will need a new oil pan gasket and a new exhaust pipe flange gasket. Put the car on ramps or jacks to access the undercarriage. Remove the exhaust pipe by removing the 3 nuts holding the exhaust pipe flange to the exhaust manifold. These nuts often rust and prior application of penetrating oil may be required to remove them without damage. Once the pipe is unbolted, work the exhaust system loose from the hanging brackets. In most cases the entire system does not have to be removed since there is enough room to remove the pan with only the front hangers removed. Drain the oil from the engine Remove the 10 mm bolts holding the pan to the block. Remove the old gasket material and scrape any remaining gasket from the block and pan. Install the new gasket. Forma-Gasket or a similar product may be used in small quantities to "glue" the new gasket in place and prevent shifting while the pan is reattached to the block. Reinsall the 10 mm bolts in a cross pattern to ensure the gasket is compressed evenly. Do not overtighten the bolts. Replace the pipe to flange gasket between the exhaust pipe and the exhaust manifold with a new part. Reattach the exhuast pipe to the hangers. Install the 3 bolts connecting the pipe flange to the exhaust manifold. Fill the engine with oil. Pray there are no leaks!
