Some animals have a much higher tolerance to certain forms of pollution. Many fish and birds might die because of an oil spill, but if the sanctuaries where the birds and fish breed are protected, the ecosystem may recover in time. I am not a biologist, but in personal experience, rodents seem to survive almost anything! Similarly with cockroaches.
