No, you should use the ATF fluid from the dealer. The Pilot is particuliarly finicky with fluid. Probably the best example of this is the VTM-4 unit (all wheel drive) if you even think about using anything other then dealer fluid it will start chattering. Just an FYI though, if you *need* to use a substitute fluid (perhaps not near a dealer etc), you will have to perform the flush and fill procedure (outlined in the manual). It requires basically filling, running and flushing the transmission a number of times to expunge the foreign fluid from the torque converter. The fluid is not terribly expensive and Honda is better versed in whats recommended fluid wise for the vehicle then generic off the shelf fluids. Honda specifies the use of genuine Honda ATF Z1 only. Any substitute may cause shifting problems. I would not use any other fluid period. Synthetic may be fine but I am not 100% sure so my advice is stick with Honda ATF Z1. You can ask your Honda dealer, but if he say use synthetic get it in writing or your warranty may be void.
Honda transmission fluid is specifically formulated by Honda for the transmission they designed and built. Using any other fluid will cause rough shifts. That is why you should only use genuine Honda fluid.

The 1996 Honda Accord transmission has a fluid capacity of 5.3 quarts. You can check the transmission fluid level with the transmission fluid dipstick.
Honda manual transmission fluid, from the dealer.
If your Accord is an automatic, use the Honda automatic transmission fluid. With a manual, the Honda manual transmission fluid. I'd strongly suggest using genuine Honda fluid over a substitute.
Fluid is inside the transmission.
