There are several ways the autopilot can disconnect.
- The most common method is the deactivation of the autopilot by the human pilot by turning the autopilot switch to off. In this circumstance, the autopilot system annunciates disconnect with a warble and light warning.
- In some aircraft, partial autopilot disconnect can occur when a control is actuated for a sustained period, or at all. For example, if you attempt to turn the aircraft while the autopilot is on, and keep the aerolon control in the turn position for at least 30 seconds, then the altitude and heading portions of the autopilot will remain on, but the pilot will now have control over the roll. In this case, a light annunciates the partial disconnect.
- Should the autopilot detect a malfunction, it will disconnect immediately and annunciate disconnection through a warble and light warning.
