If they don't close the gate, a family dog will have instant access to exit the gate then get hit my a car and die. Or, maybe, not get hit by a car but never come back. No food, no water, no home.

For the owner, no dog. 🐕

If a mail carrier is responsible enough to be trusted with everybody's mail, then you would not expect them to carelessly leave the gate open for the family dog to lose their life.

In Canada they are supposed to close the gate. I have dogs and called to complain that the mail man was opening the gate to enter then jumping over my short fence and then delivering the neighbours mail. The people at customer service were not happy that the letter carrier was jumping the fence and said he should also be always closing the gate.

What does the flag mean on a mailbox?

In the US, when the flag is up it means there is outgoing mail in the mailbox to be picked up by the letter carrier. This alerts the letter carrier to stop at the mailbox even if s/he has no incoming mail to leave for the addressee. When you get ready to mail a letter, leave it in the mailbox and raise the flag. When the letter carrier arrives s/he will take the mail you left in the mailbox, leave any mail s/he might have for you and lower the flag. The flag can also serve as an indication the letter carrier has come and left mail, but it's generally thought inconsiderate to use it for that purpose alone because if the letter carrier has no mail for you it forces him or her to make an unnecessary stop.
