If a torque converter gets locked up what happens?

The engine will die when you stop, just like if you were driving a manual transmission and didn't push in the clutch when you stopped.

What is A torque converter?

a major part of an automatic transmission... A torque converter is what couples the engine to the transmission. It acts a little bit like a clutch and allow the engine to drive the transmission. At slow engine speeds, like at idle, it slips so the engine will not stall while the transmission is in gear. As engine speed (RPM) increases it allows the engine to drive the transmission. This is just the basic idea of what a torque converter does.

How do you replace torque converter clutch?

An automatic transmission uses a torque converter to pass energy from the engine into the transmission. A torque converter is essentially a tub of fluid secured to the engine's flywheel that acts like an adjustable vise when spinning. The converter pushes fluid through tiny compartments inside its tub to create pressure. When the pressure is high enough, the converter passes the spinning energy from the engine into the transmission. You should replace a torque converter that is broken or one that cannot handle the power of an engine. Matching the right torque converter to an engine adds to the life of the transmission and allows the engine to operate at a higher level of performance.

How far does a torque converter go in a transmission?

the torque converter sets in the bellhousing of the transmission. the very front engine facing part of the transmission that is flared out like a bell.

How Does Torque Converter Works on Tractor Head?

It does not connect to the head. The torque converter connects directly to the crankshaft of the engine. IA torque converter is a modified form of fluid coupling that is used to transfer rotating power from an internal combustion engine or electric motor, to a rotating driven load. Like a basic fluid coupling, the torque converter normally takes the place of a mechanical clutch. In a torque converter there are at least three rotating elements: the pump, which is mechanically driven by the engine; the turbine, which drives the load; and the stator, which is interposed between the pump and turbine so that it can alter oil flow returning from the turbine to the pump.

Can a torque converter cause a car to shake and go dead when it comes to a stop?

Absolutely it can! What is happening is when the transmission is trying to unlock the torque converter and downshift to a stop, it isn't coming unlocked, and thus the engine is still locked to the wheels, like not pushing the clutch on a manual. You can avoid this hopefully by putting the transmission into neutral when coming to a stop, or try tapping the gas when the shaking starts to see if you can force it unlocked. See your Jeep or local auto shop to have them look at it. They may possibly need to replace the entire torque converter. . (This is from personal experience with the 32RH Transmission in a 99 Jeep Wrangler)

You have a 1991 dodge ram 250 van an the torque converter locked up in your transmission you bought a brand new one but the holes arent lining up right any suggestions?

If the holes do not line up, you got a torque converter for the wrong year (after 1994), or you will need a flex-plate to match. I bought the torque converter from a trusted transmission parts place.. 2 bolts go in just fine the other 2 are off by like an 8th of an inch

Why would a 87 Toyota corolla run fine in park and neutral but stall in drive and reverse?

You probably have a bad torque converter, every time you engage a moving gear, your torque converter is supposed to "free spin" the transmission when the engine is at idle. It doens't sound like it is doing its job.

What would make the engine act like its locked up?

the fact that an engine is locked up may be caused by the fact that the engine is in fact locked up

What does a tcc solenoid do?

the TCC,, torque converter clutch,,,, used on tree speed transmission in the 80's GM and on 4 speed automatics, the solenoid reads the speed of the transmission (car) and sends the signal to the computer which identifies that the car has reached proper crusing speed and is not under heavey load (full throttle) it then "locK" the torque converter to not allow any slippage like a standard automatic torque converter, basically making the torque converter act like a clutch,,, thus the name TCC torque converter clutch hope that helps,,

Why would a F350 diesel start dumping fluid out of the torque converter?

sounds like the torque converter case weld have split. did it happen under a high load application(like a heavy 5th wheel trailer)

What would cause a 2001 4runner to stall when slowing or stopping only to start right back up and stall out when put back in gear?

your torque converter has locked up.... it's like having a manual transmission with no clutch.
