The answer to this depends on what country you live in, and what school you are attending. Some universities have a very rigid program of study, such that you are not allowed to take courses that are outside of your major field. But other colleges and universities are much more flexible and they permit you to take what are called "electives" (courses of your own choosing). You should ask your advisor at the school you are attending, or if you are applying, look at the program of study and see if there is the flexibility to study outside of your major and minor areas.
