you need a doctor of veterinary medicine degree. a bachelor degree is required for admission, from any background (prerequisite courses such as animal physiology are required though) u may already have the prereq courses with your animal science degree. admission is extremely competitive, more so than med school. (because there are far fewer spots in vet medicine than med school)

Veterinary Degree
One requires a good educations to become a pet vet. One must have a bachelors degree first and then take a doctor of veterinary science degree. One must then earn a license and go through further training.

Yes some vet schools do a foundation year for students who got c's at A-level. These courses are called 'gateway' or 'foundation' courses, and you do an extra year before starting the actual vet course where they catch you up with the people who got a's. Another option is doing a vet science degree before doing a vet medicine degree, so you end up with 2 degrees at the end of it all. After doing a vet science degree many vet schools have an accelerated vet medicine course where you only have to do 4 years more to become a vet.
In the United States, you can major in anything you please for your pre-requisite undergraduate courses - there is no one specific required major. Most applicants to vet school have majored in biology, chemistry, animal science, zoology or a related science degree. However, I do remember one of my colleagues in vet school who had a bachelor's of fine arts, specifically fashion design, and she became an excellent veterinarian.
