The first free settlers to Australia lived in Sydney, at Port Jackson, New South Wales. The settlers had to build their own shelters, so in the early stages, they lived in either tents or rough lean-tos until they could establish a more permanent shelter. They needed to cut down the trees themselves to build their shacks.
