∙ 14y agoThere is currently no way to have multiple apps open at the same time on an iPad.
The only exceptions to this are some Apple-created applications that can continue to run after they are closed (for example, the Mail app will finish sending your mail even if you leave the app immediately after hitting "send").
The 4.0 release of the iPad (and iPhone) software will introduce several different multi-tasking options for apps. 4.0 should be available for the iPad sometime in the fall.

∙ 13y agoNOTE: This answer assumes you have iOS 4.2. Earlier versions of iOS don't support multitasking. You can download the update by connecting your iPad to iTunes, and clicking "check for update" in the summary window for the iPad.
The iPad has limited multitasking. Basically, it can play back music and do a few other things while you are using other apps if the apps doing the multitasking have been specially designed to multitask. The main thing that multitasking does is save your progress when you quit an app, and bring you back to the exact spot you left. You can quickly switch between recently used apps by double clicking the home button.
