Grape fruits by themselves don’t make you lose weight.
If you eat an entire Pizza and then a grapefruit to “cancel it out”, that won’t work. But, if you eat a salad with grilled tofu or chicken and THEN eat a grapefruit to replace your dessert, then sure.
A grapefruit doesn’t have magical calorie burning abilities or anything like that. Is it low calorie? Yes. Is is very good for you? Yes. Can they help you lose weight by replacing a slice of chocolate cake? Yes. But by themselves, you aren’t going to wake up 10lbs thinner.
All that said, eating grapefruits before a meal will make you more full and less likely to overeat. And grapefruits are full of good nutrients. So, eat up!
