It was, in fact, not a break from the past. Jerusalem is still a sacred city for the Muslims. Islam is the continuation of Judaism and Christianity. The Muslims must believe in all the Prophets (May peace be upon them all). It was the secret wish of the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad SAW that the House of Almighty Allah, built by Hazrat Abraham AS should become the Ka'abah for the Muslims. His wish was granted by Almighty Allah.

The general view is that Jerusalem's holiness in Judaism and Christianity gives credence to Islam being a successor to Judaism and Christianity. By switching from having Jerusalem as the qibla (direction of prayer) to having it as Mecca, Islam was making a clear break with Judaism and Christianity and charting a more "Arabian-centered" path.

Why is Muhammad's turning from Jerusalem and facing Mecca called a symbolic break with the past?

Ka'abah at Mecca was rebuilt by Prophet Hazrat Abraham as, and Hazrat Ismail as. It had the place of pilgrimage since their time. Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) was born and brought up in Mecca. He wished that holy Ka'abah should be the symbolic place for the Muslims. While in offering prayer at Madina Munawara, he was ordained by Almighty Allah that his wish/prayer had been granted. Thus during the prayers he and his followers turned their faces from Jerusalem to Mecca.
