Ka'abah at Mecca was rebuilt by Prophet Hazrat Abraham as, and Hazrat Ismail as. It had the place of pilgrimage since their time. Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) was born and brought up in Mecca. He wished that holy Ka'abah should be the symbolic place for the Muslims. While in offering prayer at Madina Munawara, he was ordained by Almighty Allah that his wish/prayer had been granted. Thus during the prayers he and his followers turned their faces from Jerusalem to Mecca.

Jerusalem was a symbol of Judaism and Christianity, the historic fathers of Islam. By turning away from Jerusalem and facing Mecca, it was a break from these traditions and the establishment of a distinct tradition.
